Software allows unprecedented levels of system complexity and new failure modes that can overwhelm standard safety engineering approaches. This Software Systems Safety (SSS) course will address the challenges and complexity that Managers and Engineers face in assuring the safety of newly developed or reused software when integrated into safety-related, operational environments. The course is based upon relevant civil and military international safety standards such as MIL-STD 882, DO-178C, IEC-61508 and UK Defence Standard 00-56.
This course aims to provide sufficient knowledge to ensure that attendees can fulfill the role of the 'intelligent customer' in safety-related software procurement and development programmes. The aim of this course is not to learn how to satisfy a particular safety standard but rather how to design a software safety programme that will be most effective for the procurement, development, maintenance and operation of software-intensive systems.
